Rescue Me ID: 16-08-18-00224Joy (female)

Bluetick Coonhound    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

oy is a lovely 6yr old, 45lb blue tick coonhound with a unique story in that she is our first dog who has 'done time'. She is being relinquished because her mom of 2 years has accepted a teaching position in Korea and does not believe it is in Joy's best interest to accompany her. Joy is an active dog who will not do well in busy city apartment living. Joy's unique story unfolds prior to her most recent home. Joy was part of a prison inmate program in which dogs who are deemed to be social and highly adoptable take part in an 8 week program of training with inmates. After receiving an extensive temperament test Joy was selected to live at ... (Read More)the prison and was with her inmate trainer 24/7. A detailed letter of Joy's skills, likes, habits and personality was provided by her companion trainer which will be passed on to her adopter. His love and pride for his girl was evident in the writings. Joy had exemplary house training skills and had learned to respond to the following commands: sit, shake, bow, down, up, off, wait, and heal. Though Joy was not cat friendly while living in the prison, her relinquishing mom indicated that she has been living with dogs and cats. She is housebroken, leash trained and was a quiet dog when in her home. She does not get car sick. Enjoys being inside and outside. Joy came to us spayed, fully vaccinated, heartworm neg and on prevention. She is microchipped. She was not living with children so we have no input yet on her compatibility with little ones. Joy lived a life of love and the longing in her eyes reveals that bewilderment which comes with missing her person and the life to which she was accustomed. Joy's adoption fee is $100. All potential adopters must submit a pre-adoption questionnaire which is provided along with adoption information at: https://www.facebook.com/548822128495391/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/984873884890211/?type=3&theater . Basset Hound Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hershey came to our shelter in Nov 2015 at age 7 months as a result of her owner's serious illness. Hershey was accustomed to a quiet comfy life surrounded by cats who were her friends and snuggle buddies. She had two failed brief adoptions and was returned. Though the cause of each return involved biting household members, there was an inconsistency which seemed to indicate something undetected was at the root of her reactive behaviors. A slight wobble was noticed in her movement and joint manipulation revealed a source of pain in her hip. Xrays confirmed that a malformation of the femur head within the hip socket was causing her pain. ... (Read More)Excessive running/activity had been heightening the pain resulting in random reactions of aggression. A donation by a compassionate supporter enabled the surgery to take place and Hershey began her road to recovery in the home of a volunteer a month ago. She has a few weeks of confined activity remaining but is available by appointment for visitation and adoption to an approved home. She will be returning to the shelter around the middle of August unless adopted before then. She can be food aggressive. Her activity levels should be controlled to avoid over taxing the repaired hip. Hershey is a basset mix with strong indications of plott hound and a mystery plumed tail breed in her heritage. A fenced yard is preferred to ensure she is not allowed to give in to her hound desires of wandering. Cats are her favorite companions. She will not be adopted to homes with young children. Her FB profile has numerous photos at: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.872062442838023.1073741860.548822128495391/1215351835175747/?type=3&theater She also has a video in the FB Video Album.     Jack Jr was one of 4 pups who stayed with us briefly before going into their adoptive homes. Jack Jr proved to have two speeds, fast and faster. His owner had health issues which prevented him from having the needed speed and environment to stay ahead of this long legged pup especially near an opening door. Concerned about his ability to keep Jack Jr safe, he elected to return him. Jack Jr is 4 mon old (as of Aug 8) and though he looks like a dobie pup with his very long legs, we believe it is more likely that a moxie mix is more accurate. Jack Jr will need an adopter capable of keeping him from bolting through open doors (unless exiting ...     RJ has a sponsor who subsidized his fee to $25. RJ is a charismatic speckled ear boy who loves, loves, loves people. He should not be with cats or male dogs. In our shelter environment, (a world that is difficult for many dogs and often produces behaviors not seen once in a home environment) he has proven to react aggressively towards them. RJ loves to give kisses and to take long walks. He is 2.5 years old but everything about him looks like 'big puppy'. He is a smallish American Bulldog mix with lots of speckles. RJ had the good fortune to be pulled from Animal Control in Dec 2014. Though he has been given great care in his many months at ... American Staffordshire Terrier Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Updated 29 May 2016. Buddy has a sponsor who subsidized his fee to $25. He has many photos and 4 videos on our FB page at: https://www.facebook.com/Charles-Smithgall-Humane-Society-and-Adoption-Center-548822128495391/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1066878093356456. Buddy will have been under shelter care for two years in July 2016. In June 2014, Buddy wandered into a neighborhood where his pleasant and affable nature resulted in a collective effort to care for him until space opened in the shelter. He came under our care in Jul 2014. Buddy is a beautiful bulldog with regal bearing who is of medium sized build. With his human friends he would ... (Read More)like to be a lap dog! He loves being out and walking/hiking/playing. He looks forward every day to be reunited outside with his friend Chili who is almost twice his size but is an ideal companion. Happy to go joy riding in a car. He is 3.5 years old and weighs 45 lbs. He takes daily medication to keep allergies in control that would otherwise cause skin and ear issues. Buddy is afraid of cats and would have a much happier home experience without them. Buddy has 4 videos at: https://www.facebook.com/Charles-Smithgall-Humane-Society-and-Adoption-Center-548822128495391/videos . Videos and photos show his enjoyment of friendly dogs and people from his young friend receiving the face washing to his more 'mature' friends who give in to his desire to play or allow him to cuddle in a lap. Buddy has a sponsor who subsidized his adoption fee to $25. All adoptions require an approval process which begins with the Pre-Adoption Questionnaire (cats and dogs each have a form): https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391&type=3 . We do adopt out of state but all approved adopters must come to the shelter to meet their chosen dog/cat and provide the transport to their new home. We do not ship/transport our residents. All adopters must agree to return any animal adopted from us if for any reason they can no longer care for that animal under the expectations agreed upon at the time of adoption. American Shorthair Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Priya is subsidized by a friend lowering her fee to $20. Priya arrived almost 2 years ago. She is the cat that never receives a second glance, that never receives an inquiry, that is never wanted. She is a young regal tuxedo girl. Priya was surviving on the streets of Atlanta with obvious unfriendly interactions from people/animals prior to her capture(with 3 kittens) and arrival at our shelter in May 2014. A compassionate local resident living part time in Atlanta asked that we give her a chance. Her fear was overwhelming of us and initially of the other cats. Priya seemed to live in terror for the next episode that would threaten her ... (Read More)safety. Trusting and feeling secure were not part of Priya's history. In time she would be able to endure and then accept the kindness extended to her by people and the friendship extended by the cats. (She can be seen grooming Danny in a private moment ). She is growing in confidence and has begun to seek the attention of some of our visitors. Life was not kind to Priya for the first year of her life but two years among friends is giving her the ability to enjoy attention and reciprocate with mutual affection. She is not going to run to visitors looking for a relationship. Like other cats of her background, she will need to first acclimate to a home and then in her time, she will seek the attention of the person who becomes part of her life. Priya has a video at: https://www.facebook.com/548822128495391/videos/vb.548822128495391/1068611633183102/?type=3&theater. Catahoula Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Benny is a 2 yr old boy with pretty merle ears/markings. He has been with us almost 2 years, since May 2014. When he arrived at 8 weeks of age as a chubby puppy there were numerous adopters interested in him but none of them wanted to undertake the surgical correction of his prolapsed tear duct (cherry eye). When he was neutered, the cherry eye was also corrected. He is housebroken and crate trained. Friendly and playful with some dogs but not all. Benny is strong and jumps on people in his excitement, therefore an adult only home is advised. He also enjoys bath time and any activity involving a body of water. He previously spent some ...
