Rescue Me ID: 16-09-22-00170Smokey Joe (male)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Joe has lived in a kennel for 3 years 3 months as of Sep 17, 2016. He has a sponsor who subsidized his fee to $25. Joe (age 5yrs) has waited the longest of all our dogs for the person(s) and home that has eluded him. He lives for the moments that a staff member can play with him or that a volunteer can walk him in the neighboring woods. When weather is good, he has 2 hours outside to run within the fenced play yard. The other 22 hours are spent in a kennel run, waiting...hoping...for the person who never comes. He initially came in as a tiny puppy, was adopted and returned fifteen months later in June 2013. He was returned because the ... (Read More)other dog in the house continually attacked him. Joe came back to us with a fear of leashes that subsided with time and patience of each those who earned his trust. When he is with his favorite people, he wiggles with joy and one can see the glimpse of the younger Joe who believed in love and forever companionship. Joe is a strong dog weighing in at 77 lbs. He is good with most dogs and plays best with those of a size that will not be run over by his strength. An adult only household is being sought with an experienced dog person. Joe will be a loyal and protective companion who will give his life to defend the person he loves. A secure fenced yard is required for Joe. Joe was housetrained before relinquishment but unknown how quickly he will remember those skills. His friendliness towards cats in motion is unknown. Dachshund Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults

Jackson's short term adoption ended when he proved to have two speeds, fast and faster. His owner had health issues which prevented him from having the needed speed and environment to stay ahead of this long legged pup especially near an opening door. Concerned about his ability to keep Jackson safe, he elected to ... (Read More)return him. Jackson will need an adopter capable of keeping him from bolting through open doors (unless exiting into a fenced yard) and also to keep him safe when outside if he is to be exercised via leash walking. Jack has done a community outreach visit to a nursing home where his enthusiasm brought many smiles. He has also a proven to be a great hiking companion and will happily strut his stuff in a parade. Though he is uber energetic at the shelter, he is excellent on a leash once he is away from it and on the move. He also travels well in a crate. He loves activities that include other dogs and is full of kisses for everything in his path. When out among mountains,, streams and people he is not afraid of any situation or noise, and his tail never stops. He is longing for that day when the trip away from the shelter will not result in a return to his lonely cot. All of our residents are available to approved adopters. The approval process is explained with a Pre-Adoption Questionnaire at at: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/984873884890211/?type=3&theater . Dachshund Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults

Secondary infections resulted from the frantic scratching and chewing as Blake did the only thing he could in his vain efforts to stop the intense itching that could not be eased. Blake was found by a local resident who searched for his owner with no success. His microchip ... (Read More)did not reveal an owner. He was accepted by the shelter in June with what initially was thought to be a very severe untreated reaction to flea bites. Skin scraping revealed the presence of mange mites, a diagnosis which not only was ravaging his skin but would keep him in isolation for 3 months. With the help of medications & frequent medicated baths, Blake rode a roller coaster of good and bad days as his weakened immune system fought back against the voracious mites and the secondary infections. After having two appropriately spaced skin scrapings that were negative for mites, Blake was declared ready for socialization as well as for adoption. Blake is a gentle soul with a sweet nature. His physical appearance is still rough as his skin has the texture of tough hide in some areas and his hair is still regenerating. Photos shown here were taken Aug 21 and he has improved in the subsequent 3 weeks. He wants nothing more than to be hugged and to share an exchange of affection. Blake is neutered, microchipped, heart worm negative and fully vaccinated. His diet is being monitored/altered to determine if there is a food that is optimal for his recovering system. He appears friendly towards other dogs and all sizes of people. His house skills as well as his attitude towards cats are unknown. He walks well on leash. He is in great need of someone who will love him. American Staffordshire Terrier Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament

Updated 29 May 2016. Buddy has a sponsor who subsidized his fee to $25. Buddy will have been under shelter care for two years in July 2016. In June 2014, Buddy wandered into a neighborhood where his pleasant and affable nature resulted in a collective effort to care for him until space opened in the shelter. He loves being out and walking/hiking/playing. He looks forward every day to be reunited outside with his friend Chili who is almost twice his size but is an ideal companion. Happy to go joy riding in a car. He is 3.5 years old and weighs 45 lbs. He takes daily medication to keep allergies in control that would otherwise cause skin and ear issues. Buddy is afraid of cats and would have a much happier home experience without them. Buddy has 4 videos at: https://www.facebook.com/Charles-Smithgall-Humane-Society-and-Adoption-Center-548822128495391/videos . Videos and photos show his enjoyment of friendly dogs and people from his young friend receiving the face washing to his more 'mature' friends who give in to his desire to play or allow him to cuddle in a lap. Buddy has a sponsor who subsidized his adoption fee to $25. All adoptions require an approval process which begins with the Pre-Adoption Questionnaire (cats and dogs each have a form): https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391&type=3 . We do adopt out of state but all approved adopters must come to the shelter to meet their chosen dog/cat and provide the transport to their new home. We do not ship/transport our residents. American Shorthair Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Priya is subsidized by a friend lowering her fee to $20. Priya arrived almost 2 years ago. She is the cat that never receives a second glance, that never receives an inquiry, that is never wanted. She is a young regal tuxedo girl. Priya was surviving on the streets of Atlanta with obvious unfriendly interactions from people/animals prior to her capture(with 3 kittens) and arrival at our shelter in May 2014. A compassionate local resident living part time in Atlanta asked that we give her a chance. Her fear was overwhelming of us and initially of the other cats. Priya seemed to live in terror for the next episode that would threaten her ... (Read More)safety. Trusting and feeling secure were not part of Priya's history. In time she would be able to endure and then accept the kindness extended to her by people and the friendship extended by the cats. (She can be seen grooming Danny in a private moment ). She is growing in confidence and has begun to seek the attention of some of our visitors. Life was not kind to Priya for the first year of her life but two years among friends is giving her the ability to enjoy attention and reciprocate with mutual affection. She is not going to run to visitors looking for a relationship. Like other cats of her background, she will need to first acclimate to a home and then in her time, she will seek the attention of the person who becomes part of her life. Priya has a video at: https://www.facebook.com/548822128495391/videos/vb.548822128495391/1068611633183102/?type=3&theater. Catahoula Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant

Benny is a 2 yr old boy with pretty merle ears/markings. He has been with us almost 2 years, since May 2014. When he arrived at 8 weeks of age as a chubby puppy there were numerous adopters interested in him but none of them wanted to undertake the surgical correction of his prolapsed tear duct (cherry eye). When he was neutered, the cherry eye was also corrected. He is housebroken and crate trained. Friendly and playful with some dogs but not all.
