Rescue Me ID: 15-05-18-00062Grover (male)

Basset Hound    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Very Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Abused/Neglected

Grover is a 10 year old classic basset hound who has been under shelter care for 21 months. He is in a temporary care home that will soon be unable to care for him full time. He is afraid of chain link enclosures stemming from his years of confinement and neglect, so will be unable to reside in the shelter. That fear makes him aggressive to anyone entering the enclosure. He has been in recovery/rehab from neglect, isolation and bad treatment that occurred during the first 8.5 years of his life. Microchipped, housebroken, crate trained, playful, goofy, quiet. Loves to play with dogs. Very affectionate with his temporary care provider. His ... (Read More)medical needs and occasional behavior issues tend to overshadow his positives when being considered by potential adopters taken by his sweet mournful face. Potential to bite when strangers reach for his head or if getting into his sleeping space. Because of those concerns, he will not be adopted to homes with children and aggressive dogs. Previous medical neglect resulted in gum issues/abscesses, requiring removal of upper canines, reducing ability to defend self. Will require life long prescription eyedrops ($50 per month) twice daily to treat 'dry eye' which otherwise would result in painful decline to blindness. Must be muzzled for vet exams and nail clipping. Has a level 4 heart murmur. He is terrified of thunder, fireworks, gunshots, and the sound of moderate rain and wind. Adoptive home must be able to keep Grover as an indoor dog. Must have fenced yard as he will follow his nose and wander, disastrous with his reduced ability to defend self and tendency to bite strangers who would reach around his head. Must always be on leash when being walked. Adopter will have lifelong backup boarding care from current temporary care provider. Adopter must be within a reasonable driving distance of Sautee GA so that he can be returned if it becomes necessary at any point of his lifetime or if boarding care is needed. Grover has his own facebook page with many videos and photos, https://www.facebook.com/grover.basset?ref=hl . (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-04-19-00743Allie and RJ

American Bulldog Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Vaccinations Current

There once was was a lovely black and white bulldog named Allie. She wasn't always treated well and had to be very brave to overcome her past. But even though she learned to trust and love, her face was a bit crooked and at times, she would drool a little. One day she ran excitedly to greet a new visitor with a friendly face hoping that this might be the person for her. As she stood up against the fence with a hopeful heart, the friendly face disappeared when seeing a bit of drool beginning to fall and she backed away with a loud 'Ewwwwwww'. Allie dropped to the ground and hung her head in shame. She crept away in devastation at the ... (Read More)realization that she was looked upon with disgust. Despite many attempts to bring Allie's story to light, there were no adopters who had compassion for sweet Allie. Even Santa left her behind, again. Meanwhile, a very handsome white and black bulldog named RJ found himself discarded and sitting on death row. One day his misfortunes turned a corner and he came to live in the same sanctuary where sweet Allie held on to her dreams for a life of love. By chance, the confident and charismatic RJ was introduced to Allie in hopes that he would boost her spirits and be her friend. As they romped and played, RJ came to realize that this was no ordinary girl. He was smitten with her kind nature and loving spirit. His heart ached for her sadness that no one wanted her. He devoted himself to keeping her face clean from any traces of drool. He would step back to ensure that Allie was front and center when visitors came to look for a family member. And he kept her spirits high as they napped together in the daytime sun and communicated in doggie whispers to each other at night from their separate kennels, anticipating the next morning when they could again be together. To RJ, Allie is perfect. He does what he can to present her to everyone, the way he sees her, knowing that his heart will be broken when she leaves. Allie has waited a very long time for a person who will love her as devotedly as does RJ. RJ has waited through the cold winter months for his cheeky grin to captivate a human heart with the same intensity as when Allie so freely gave her heart to him. And maybe... just maybe...there could be a happily ever where two star crossed pups could defy the odds and find themselves together forever. Furry tails can come true. *Note: Allie has lived at the shelter since Sept 2013. RJ has been at the shelter since Dec 2014. Both are 2 years old. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Charles-Smithgall-Humane-Society-and-Adoption-Center/548822128495391 Fees are subsidized for both dogs. Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

JayCee is a timid 1.5 yr old pointer mix. He appears to have been treated roughly before coming to the shelter in Sept 2014. His owner had demanded that the shelter take JayCee on a day when filled to capacity and was told he could be accepted once there was an open run. The angry owner drove across the street and pushed him out the door where he cowered and shook in fear when approached by the property owner. He stayed there until the next day when he went to the vet for neutering and also began treatment of an untreated skin condition. He then came into the shelter. Jaycee retreats to the back of his kennel when strangers approach. His ... (Read More)tail is almost always tucked beneath him around unfamiliar people. Even after 4 months in the midst of kind treatment, he often seems to be expecting something horrific to happen to him. Potential adopters never ask about him. Rescue Me ID: 14-08-04-00495Beanie (female)

Feist Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Beanie has been under shelter care since 18 Oct 2011. Though we can celebrate that Beanie has been in a safe environment during this time, over 3 years without a home is not what we desire for any of our residents. Forever happiness seems to always be just out of reach for Beanie. Many inquiries in response to extensive publicity, but the few that come to visit, decide against her. Beanie has grown up in the shelter from the age of 16 weeks and has curled up each night on a raised cot in a world of concrete and chain link. She is the longest resident of the shelter having been passed over during the searches by thousands of visitors. ... (Read More)Despite her beautiful brindle coat and pretty white feet, no one ever looks at Beanie for long. Her soft brown eyes hold the knowledge that this may be the only life she will ever have. Though she shows great love for the volunteers and staff that she knows and trusts, this is not an automatic response. Most dogs are unaffected by living in a kennel building either due to personality or quick adoptions but there are others which struggle. The kennel environment can take a dog without issues and create undesirable behaviors due to the confinement, the extreme noise level and the limited amount of people/dog interaction. If adoption were based solely on appearance, Beanie may have left the shelter long ago. But kennel life over time has challenged Beanie's ability to cope and when new people enter her world, they must do so with gentleness and the knowledge that her trust must be earned. If frightened by strangers or gestures, Beanie may lunge and snap. This behavior though rarely seen, has occurred with some men and occasionally with women. For this reason, Beanie will not be adopted to a home with children. She has spent time as of late in the home of a volunteer and this experience has evolved into being 95% housebroken, crate trained and highly protective of the home and everything therein. Additionally she has enjoyed playing with the many resident dogs of all sizes and genders, but unknown dogs entering the property will not be welcome as she takes seriously, her duty to protect. She must be confined to either a fenced yard, room or crate when strangers are present until she can see that they mean no harm. Only homes with a fenced yard and within a two hour drive of Sautee GA will be considered. Home visit before and after placement will be done. Potential adopters will receive a questionnaire to begin the adoption assessment for Beanie. Photos will be sent upon request which show the loving nature she shares with friends. For additional information on this animal, adoption process/requirements and adoption fee, call the shelter administrative office at 706-865-4135 during operating hours of 10-4 Tue-Sat and 1-4 on Sun. Catahoula Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Benny is a 9 mon old catahoula mix youngster with pretty merle markings. He has been under shelter care for 7 months since arriving in May 2014 at 8 weeks of age. When he was a little chubby puppy there were numerous adopters interested in him but none of them wanted to undertake the surgical correction of his prolapsed tear duct (cherry eye). When he was old enough to be neutered, the cherry eye was also corrected. All the adopters from his little puppy days were nowhere to be found once he was in the peak of health. As more time passed, Benny's sunny outgoing character began to withdraw as he struggled daily with kennel life. Benny was ...     Allie is a 2 year old bulldog. She has been in shelter care for 14 months. Allie is a cautious girl who is willing to be friends upon feeling secure with newly met people. When Allie was about 8 mon old, the tilt to her head was noticed and diagnosed as mild facial nerve paralysis that fortunately posed no financial/medical intervention as she had adapted to the condition. Rescue Me ID: 14-01-14-00434Smokey Joe (male)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Smokey Joe is a dog affected by experiences that left him frightened and presenting fear aggression upon arrival at the shelter. His fear of leashes was evident from the beginning, giving rise to great concern as to what he had experienced with them to cause such fearful reactions. The kennel environment has made it difficult for Joe to come around as is evidenced in the way he still presents to visitors by hurling himself at his kennel gate and also the outdoor fencing. This aggressive behavior which causes potential adopters to immediately dismiss him is a front for the 'inner' dog which is slowly emerging. After months of patience, gentle ... (Read More)handling, and a large supply of treats, Joe is showing that he again can have the trust for people that he had when first leaving the shelter as a happy puppy. Joe initially came into the shelter in Jan12 as part of a litter of 5 week old pups. He was adopted and after 15 months was returned to the shelter in Jul 13. Realizing that Joe's behaviors were based in fear has given those who care for him, the determination to work with Joe on his issues of trusting people. Joe has a sweet and goofy personality that is seen by staff and volunteers. A dog that is so excited when in the company of his people friends that he wiggles and whimpers with joy at an ear scratch, a belly rub, a sloppy exchange of kisses. Joe is hesitant to show this side of his personality with people he has never met but with various lengths of time, he will warm to people that he senses are not a threat to him. Joe will be a wonderful companion, friend and protector of the person(s) willing and capable of offering Joe a home in which he can thrive. Photos of Joe with one of his volunteer friends show the relaxed side of the goofy boy caught up in the pleasure of receiving the affection he craves. Joe will require a fenced yard and a strong person to join him on leashed walks. He weighs about 60 lbs. He is good with some dogs and plays best with those of a size that will not be run over by his strength. An adult only household is being sought. His reaction to cats at rest or in motion is unknown. He is neutered, up to date on all vaccines and heartworm negative. There have been no incidents or indications that Joe has issues with children. However, he will not be placed in a home with young children. Careful scrutiny of potential adopters will take place through extensive screening, a check of veterinarian references and home visits before and after placement. Joe is a good dog. For additional information on this animal, adoption process/requirements and adoption fee, call the shelter administrative office at 706-865-4135 during operating hours of 10-4 Tue-Sat and 1-4 on Sun.
