Rescue Me ID: 14-08-04-00498Beanie (female)

Treeing Walker Coonhound Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Beanie will soon achieve the sad distinction of having lived at the CSHS shelter for 3 years come 18 Oct 2014. Though we can celebrate that Beanie has been in a safe environment during this time, 3 years without a home is not what we desire for any of our residents. Forever happiness seems to always be just out of reach for Beanie. Many inquiries in response to extensive publicity, but the few that come to visit, decide against her. Beanie has grown up in the shelter from the age of 16 weeks and has curled up each night on a raised cot in a world of concrete and chain link. She is the longest resident of the shelter having been passed ... (Read More)over during the searches by thousands of visitors. Despite her beautiful brindle coat and pretty white feet, no one ever looks at Beanie for long. Her soft brown eyes hold the knowledge that this may be the only life she will ever have. Though she shows great love for the volunteers and staff that she knows and trusts, this is not an automatic response. Most dogs are unaffected by living in a kennel building either due to personality or quick adoptions but there are others which struggle. The kennel environment can take a dog without issues and create undesirable behaviors due to the confinement, the extreme noise level and the limited amount of people/dog interaction. If adoption were based solely on appearance, Beanie may have left the shelter long ago. But kennel life over time has challenged Beanie's ability to cope and when new people enter her world, they must do so with gentleness and the knowledge that her trust must be earned. If frightened by strangers or gestures, Beanie may lunge and snap. This behavior though rarely seen, has occurred with some men and occasionally with women. For this reason, Beanie will not be adopted to a home with children. She has spent time as of late in the home of a volunteer and this experience has evolved into being 95% housebroken, crate trained and highly protective of the home and everything therein. Additionally she has enjoyed playing with the many resident dogs of all sizes and genders, but unknown dogs entering the property will not be welcome as she takes seriously, her duty to protect. She must be confined to either a fenced yard, room or crate when strangers are present until she can see that they mean no harm. Only homes with a fenced yard and within a two hour drive of Sautee GA will be considered. Home visit before and after placement will be done. Potential adopters will receive a questionnaire to begin the adoption assessment for Beanie. Photos will be sent upon request which show the loving nature she shares with friends. Beanie has a sponsor whose donation has reduced her adoption fee to $25. (Less)

Cheyenne was adopted from the shelter as a puppy and was reclaimed because her owners did not provide for her medical care and spaying as outlined in her contract. The owners seemed to be ambivalent about her return, stating she was annoying their pig by chewing on it's ears. It was the only playmate she had. She had red skin and was missing fur around her neck where either the bark/chock collar was placed or from a flea/tick collar. She did not seem to mind her return to the shelter and is enjoys having doggie friends to play with outside in the fenced areas.     Baby Benny is the last of his litter. He came in with cherry eye which caused those interested in adopting the then chubby little puppy to decline because of his surgical need. When Benny was old enough for neutering in July 2014, the tear duct in his eye was corrected. He has had no after effects from the surgery but now that he is a bigger puppy, he has not drawn the interest experienced from his little puppy days. Cute as a button with merle ears and a few big splotches against a primarily white coat. Loves to give kisses and be cuddled. Plays nice with other dogs and is excited to receive attention from two leggers. Benny is 5 months old ... Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Corky is a joyful coonhound mix who embraces both the keen intelligence and single mindedness of the hound breeds. She is 8 months old and overflowing with puppy enthusiasm for playing with toys, people and running full tilt with her incredibly long legs. Her tenacious sprit can have her climbing tees and following a ground scent with steadfast focus to find the object that her nose tells her most be located. She was in an adoptive home for 6 weeks and quickly learned to ring a bell to go outside to potty/play and to be let back into the house. She adapted to crate training, learned to sit for all meals and snacks, and learned to lay down, ... (Read More)roll over and shake hands. She loves to chase a frisbee but is still working on how to catch it. Loves to be with people and if permitted would be in your lap or beneath your feet. One of her downfalls is her excitement inspired by kitties which motivates her to chase them. She is clueless as to their aversion for her enthusiastic hound attempts to play catch and toss with them, much as she does her toys. Her second downfall is her desire to dig holes that average 3 feet deep. She will happily help you plant your trees and shrubbery. A little more training is in order to correct her shortcomings. She is very pack oriented and loves dogs as much as she does people. While in her adoptive home, she was DNA tested and the results showed her to be primarily a Treeing Walker Coonhound with some English Springer Spaniel and German Shepherd. Rescue Me ID: 14-03-16-00141Darla (female)

Catahoula Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Low Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Darla entered the safety of the shelter in March 2014 as a 5 mon old pup having been removed from a kill facility. She came with her mother ( a beautiful spotted catahoula) who was quickly adopted, leaving the terrified young Darla to do everything within her power to be brave in the often chaotic environment. Darla continues to be afraid of strangers though she does enjoy the company of gentle dogs who will play nicely with her. Darla has the unfortunate luck to be a medium sized black dog, a color and size which is the most abundant and overlooked by adopters. Though her black coat is shiny and her pretty white paws and chest add to what ... (Read More)staff feel is a lovely young girl, she does not seem to possess the ability to reach the heart of the many visitors looking for a lifelong best friend. Early photos will show a terrified pup. Currently her photos show a growing girl who will know no life but that of a shelter if no one is willing to offer her a chance to have a comfy bed in a loving home. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-01-24-00116Allie (female)

American Bulldog Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Allie is a young girl 1 year old who has mild facial nerve paralysis giving her a slight tilt to the left side of her head. Also on the left side of her face is less blinking ability and very slight occasional bit of drooling. She was evaluated by a vet on 21 Jan and determined to have adapted well to the mild shortcomings. She requires no treatment. It is unknown if the facial paralysis was congenital or occurred at any time between birth and return to the shelter in Oct 13 when it was detected. She was adopted at 8 weeks the day after her arrival and was returned 6 months later as being too big for her senior owners to handle. She was ... (Read More)living indoors so it is expected her house training manners should easily return. When Allie was returned to the shelter she was skittish and inclined to bite but that behavior was attributed to a very tight harness that had dug into her skin. Once removed, she began to show the signs of the loving disposition that was being clouded by pain. She is still slow to warm to strangers (usually half an hour will do the trick) but once she feels comfortable in their presence, her loving playful side will come out and she will want more love and attention. To have a best friend would make her world complete. Rescue Me ID: 14-01-14-00434Smokey Joe (male)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Smokey Joe is a dog affected by experiences that left him frightened and presenting fear aggression upon arrival at the shelter. His fear of leashes was evident from the beginning, giving rise to great concern as to what he had experienced with them to cause such fearful reactions. The kennel environment has made it difficult for Joe to come around as is evidenced in the way he still presents to visitors by hurling himself at his kennel gate and also the outdoor fencing. This aggressive behavior which causes potential adopters to immediately dismiss him is a front for the 'inner' dog which is slowly emerging. After months of patience, gentle ... (Read More)handling, and a large supply of treats, Joe is showing that he again can have the trust for people that he had when first leaving the shelter as a happy puppy. Joe initially came into the shelter in Jan12 as part of a litter of 5 week old pups. He was adopted and after 15 months was returned to the shelter in Jul 13. Realizing that Joe's behaviors were based in fear has given those who care for him, the determination to work with Joe on his issues of trusting people. Joe has a sweet and goofy personality that is seen by staff and volunteers. A dog that is so excited when in the company of his people friends that he wiggles and whimpers with joy at an ear scratch, a belly rub, a sloppy exchange of kisses. Joe is hesitant to show this side of his personality with people he has never met but with various lengths of time, he will warm to people that he senses are not a threat to him. Joe will be a wonderful companion, friend and protector of the person(s) willing and capable of offering Joe a home in which he can thrive. Photos of Joe with one of his volunteer friends show the relaxed side of the goofy boy caught up in the pleasure of receiving the affection he craves. Joe will require a fenced yard and a strong person to join him on leashed walks. He weighs about 60 lbs. He is good with some dogs and plays best with those of a size that will not be run over by his strength. An adult only household is being sought. His reaction to cats at rest or in motion is unknown. He is neutered, up to date on all vaccines and heartworm negative. There have been no incidents or indications that Joe has issues with children. However, he will not be placed in a home with young children. Careful scrutiny of potential adopters will take place through extensive screening, a check of veterinarian references and home visits before and after placement. Joe is a good dog.To follow Joe's adoption journey and to see more photos LIKE us on: https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=696999720344297&id=548822128495391 (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 13-08-31-00134Grover (male)

Basset Hound    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Abused/Neglected

Prior to coming under shelter care, Grover had lived his entire life in a backyard pen without medical care. His only people socialization was with the owner who brought food to the pen and left. He had a female companion most of that time who was adopted shortly after coming to the shelter. Grover is a classically beautiful hound who weighs in at 59 pounds with long mahogany ears. He has received extensive medical care to correct issues in addition to being neutered and having teeth cleaned. He is heartworm negative. Grover is afraid of thunder and other loud noises. He has overcome most of his fears once he realized that no one intended ... (Read More)to hurt him. He loves being indoors. He loves companionship of people and is submissive to other dogs. He does not jump on people or furniture. He has been living in a foster home which has provided great insight to the actions which scare him as well as how to help him overcome his fears. Seeking a home without children. He would be happy to have doggie friends. He is a quiet dog. He will need to receive eye drops twice daily throughout his life to prevent the return of 'dry eye' a condition now under control.
