How many more years will it take to find the person with compassion for the quiet girl that no one wants? Dolly has already waited 3 years and 3 months for the person who never comes. She has overcome the terror of her start to life which left her hiding in the woods during the bitter cold of winter in Dec 2014. Beagle Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

'Do I have to go back?' Reggie's face reveals the sadness when realizing that it is time to go back into his kennel having just had a glorious hike with volunteers. The highlight of Reggie's week is an outing during which he can feel like a normal dog. A brief time of smells and sights that are experienced beyond his confined world that is shelter life. Reggie was only 6 months old when he arrived a year ago in March 2017. Cute as a button with ears that almost outsize his little face. A cute puppy usually does not usually have a long wait until on their way home. Not so for Reggie. Despite his desperate attempts to catch the attention of ... (Read More)visitors as they paused with a momentary glance, Reggie was never what they wanted. Reggie has never met a dog he did not like. He plays with great enthusiasm which may not work for all doggie playmates unless able to firmly keep him in his place when overstepping boundaries. He has recently begun to have some hiking excursions away from the shelter and he revels in the attention, happily meeting people and dogs along the way and loving the thrill of a car ride each way. Those are moments for which Reggie lives. He never hesitates to show his appreciation for those weekly adventures that his young heart wishes would never end. Reggie loves people of all sizes and ages. He is interested in the office cats as they just might be playmates (sshhh, they won't) while respectful of their signals when personal space is overly invaded. He is neutered, fully vaccinated and tested free of heartworms. He is a 1-1/2 year old beagle/German Pinscher mix and weighs 32 pounds. Reggie has a sponsor who has subsidized his fee to $25.     Lacey is a 5 1/2 year old gentle boxer mix who was owner discarded at Animal Control, a place that is time limited for dogs in which there is no interest shown by visitors nor by rescue organizations. Her body had scabbed abrasions and hairless spots that do not appear able to regenerate hair. Though her muzzle is turning white, it is not an indication of senior status. With her euthanasia date at hand Lacey was out of time and desperately needed rescue. So Lacey has joined our residents in what we hope will be a short wait for happiness to find her. Due to renovations and a shortage of kennels, Lacey is temporarily in an offsite home. She ... (Read More)is scheduled for thorough vetting and spay surgery. She is reported to be kind to the other dogs and cats in her temporary lodging. She is content to settle into the couch with her head on a welcoming knee. Very affectionate and will move throughout the house with her people in order to stay close to them. Loves to go for an energetic walk and does not pull at the leash, so content to be with companions sharing the moment alongside them. She is grateful for the comfort of being indoors and receiving affection. She is housebroken. She does not jump on people making her a safe companion for everyone from the very small and to those older who may not be so steady on their feet. She is a very quiet girl and only barks when someone is at the door. Lacey is heart worm negative and is now spayed. If wishing to meet Lacey, call the office to ensure she is there or can be brought to the shelter. 706-865-4135 Adoption fee $100. Arrival date Feb 21, 2018. . Video in Comments. Siberian Husky    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Coda is a handsome blue eyed snow white Siberian husky who arrived in Sept, was adopted in Oct for one month and was returned. As was reported by the first owner, Coda is selective as to the dogs with whom he is compatible. That selective behavior was evidenced during the short term adoption. Also confirmed was Coda's unsuitability to be in a home with children. He is not a fan of young children and will not be adopted into a home with children. Coda was originally relinquished in September because his family of 4 years was moving. Coda is 6 years old, 48 pounds, housebroken, good on a leash and likes car rides. He is not cat friendly. ... Rescue Me ID: 18-02-06-00187Oscar (male)

American Staffordshire Terrier Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Oscar has a sponsor who subsidized his fee to $25. A month has past since Oscar came into our care in Jan 2018. He grows in playfulness with his caregivers and expresses his affection for their attention. His face lights up when a tennis ball is brought out for some serious fetch and return fun. Oscar recently was living in a world far removed from the current one. Now he is safe and receiving overdue medical attention as well as recovering emotionally from previous neglect and abandonment. Oscar's eyes are soft and kind. Yet they have viewed the world from a pit of misery where he was living only one month ago in a pen deep in mud with ... (Read More)raining/ freezing conditions from which there was no escape. His response to affection is one of overwhelming relief and a desire to show his gratitude by offering a paw and to gently take treats with an appreciative wag of his tail. His spirit has struggled with abandonment when left behind by his family and at the mercy of brutal weather. A relative became aware of the situation and brought him to our shelter. At one time Oscar lived indoors and enjoyed life with the children of the household. What brought him to such an end after what seemed to be a caring home is a mystery. But for every animal who enters our shelter, endings are beginnings. Oscar goes to sleep now on a blanketed cot in a warm kennel with ample food and people who are surrounding him with loving arms and pockets full of treats. He is 4 1/2 years old, of medium build at 59 pounds. He is a Staffordshire Terrier mix. He is very smart and appears to have learned some basic commands. Applications are being accepted as we seek the home which will provide him with the love which will put the light back into those gentle eyes. Oscar arrived in Jan 2017. Shortly thereafter he was fully vetted and tested negative for heartworms. He is still undergoing behavior/skills assessment as he settles into his new environment and recovers from a long over due neutering. A home with a secure fence that is in place at time of adoption is required. A home visit for environment safety is required. At the time of this posting (Feb 7), only homes without dogs/cats will be considered as Oscar still needs to be assessed for compatibility with other animals. His post will be updated after there is more information on his preferences in 4 legged companions. More photos in Comments. Application can be submitted online at: https://www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/page/dog-adoption-application/ or at the shelter. Adoption of all dogs/cats requires an approval process to ensure that they are going into a home appropriate for their needs and that will keep them safe. Rescue Me ID: 18-01-28-00082Cooper (male)

Golden Retriever Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Cooper has a sponsor who cares and has subsidized his fee to $25. Cooper is the oldest dog in our shelter at 9 years of age. He can often be seen in his kennel lying on his cot with a look of resignation on his face that comes from knowing that visitors will walk past him. He seems to know that none of those visitors are there for him. Since Cooper first came to us 2 years ago in Jan 2016, he has had 3 adoptions. When initially relinquished, he had unique needs that were not revealed. As a result he had 2 placements that were not the right fit. We learned that he does not like children and also that he was possessive of food and some items ... (Read More)and would aggressively protect them. He finally struck gold midway into 2016 when he went to live with a retired gentleman who hired a trainer and worked extensively at lowering Cooper's fears and reactive behaviors. It was a love match and Cooper was over the moon happy. Cooper's world came crashing down a year in ago in Feb 2017 when unavoidable circumstances resulted in the addition of an adult daughter and her child to the household. Cooper's reaction to children was unchanged and he was returned. He was devastated at both the loss of his new life and a return to shelter living. A thorough vet evaluation followed his return and Cooper was put on medication to calm his anxieties and help him to endure the wait for another chance at happiness. We have seen great improvement in his issues with possessiveness. He is sweet and loving with adults and is very fond of his caretakers. He revels in their attention and is happy to have their companionship. Cooper has the features of 3 breeds; golden border collie, Nova Scotia Duck Toller and Golden Retriever. He was house trained when returned a year ago. He is leash trained and responds to sit and lay down. He will not be adopted into a home with children or with cats. He does not like cats. He has been in the play yards with other dogs and he is indifferent to them. A fenced yard already in place is required to adopt Cooper. He is neutered, fully vaccinated and tested free of heart worms. Catahoula Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Most Cats
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Videos for Molly can be seen at the shelter Facebook page. Molly has a sponsor who subsidized her fee to $25. Molly has experienced severe trauma in her young life and a peaceful home is being sought to completely bring her back from the edge. In early 2017 Molly was seen searching for food and successfully eluding contact with people. She was visibly pregnant but too terrified to trust approaching people. It took a patience and a trap to capture the young girl and bring her indoors where her kind rescuers gave her a safe enclosure to birth and raise her puppies. All babies were placed in safe homes and Molly was brought to the shelter in ... (Read More)April 2017. Initially Molly was so terrified she had to be carried from her kennel and would flatten to the ground as caretakers attempted to give her exercise and companionship. Her terror of men was overwhelming as she sought to hide in the corner of her kennel or escape to the outer portion during cleaning. Molly arrived in April 2017. For most of that time she has been on an evaluation hold as efforts were put into restoring the spirit of the gentle girl who has never display the slightest sign of aggression. Molly may do best in a female only household though others will be considered. A secure fenced yard is required. She is fine with dogs, cats and may do ok with calm gentle children. Rescue Me ID: 17-12-05-00062Smokey Joe (male)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Revised Jan 29, 2018. Smokey Joe has a sponsor who subsidized his fee to $25. Smokey Joe has been at the shelter for 4 1/2 years and has waited the longest of any dog ever in our care to have a home. The long wait is not because there was no one who wanted Joe. It is due to the inability to find the person with the experience, skills and environment to safely work with him while keeping him safe. He first was adopted from the shelter as a puppy in 2012 and was returned in May of 2013 with an intense fear of leashes and anything that looked like a leash. Over time he has developed issues which were cause to put him on prozac, an ... (Read More)anti-anxiety medication as a result of kennel confinement and a suppression of his spirit for such a long time. Joe's photos and videos show the great love he has for the caretakers who have earned his trust and total devotion. When in their presence he is joyous and will engage in puppyish behavior. We continue to seek an adopter experienced in dogs with behavior issues what could result in aggression. Much of Joe's behavior issues are believed to be due to the stress of long term shelter living and may subside when in an environment that lacks the stress that comes with being in this environment. But it is not possible to have any certainty that leaving this behind is the total answer to restoring Joe's spirit to one of being the full time happy dog seen in his video. Therefore, the only applicants that will be considered for Joe are those with experience in working with and healing dogs like Joe and who also have the environment that keeps Joe safe as well as people unknown to him. Joe is 6 years old and is a strong 78 pound Shepherd mix. We are seeking an adult only household with secure fencing that is in place at the time of adoption. Joe had a female companion in the play yards until she was adopted so homes with dogs will be assessed with the adopter. He has been uninterested in the office cats. Smokey Joe's fee has been subsidized by a sponsor to $25. He is neutered, fully vaccinated and tested free of heart worms. Joe takes prozac daily and his adopter may need to continue this medication short term or for the duration of his life. Applicants who do not meet the requirements detailed in this profile will not be considered and should not apply. Application can be submitted online at our website: https://www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/page/dog-adoption-application/ or at the shelter. Adoption policies/application procedures are detailed under All Adoptable Animals. Adoption of all dogs/cats requires an approval process to ensure that they are going into a home suitable for their needs and committed to their care and safety. Each is placed with same due diligence that they would be given if they were our own furry family members. Adopters who are not within the local area of the shelter MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. Meeting approved adopters is one of the final steps in the adoption process. We do not permit transport or shipping of our residents without the adopter. Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter which provides quality care, spay/neuter-all vaccines, deworming, vet exam, standard disease testing and for dogs-monthly heart worm prevention treatment. Resident animals are owner relinquished and also accepted from local Animal Control. The shelter is not permitted by GA law to accept strays. The facility is usually operating at capacity with a list of animals approved for intake waiting for space to open. Adoption hours are Tues-Sat 10-4 and Sun 1-4.
